What IS platelet rich plasma (prp)?

Platelet Rich Plasma is a portion of our blood, called plasma, which contains a large number of platelets. Platelets naturally circulate in the blood and play a crucial role in blood clotting. These platelets also contain proteins called growth factors which are needed to stimulate the healing of injuries. Because of these healing properties, platelet rich plasma, or plasma with concentrations of three to five times greater than usually present in blood, can be used for many types of healing.

At the start of any PRP procedure your blood will be drawn, spun down, and separated to extract the concentrated elements. These elements are the plasma rich parts of the blood that are injected back into the specific area of choice for healing.

Our practitioners utilize PRP in various procedures. The face is a popular area of procedure that utilizes PRP serum placed on the face after a microneedling session as well as PRP injections for a natural and safe “face lift”. PRP injections on scars (abdominal, surgical, injury, etc.) or inflamed areas provide rapid cell recovery resulting in diminished appearance. PRP injections of the vaginal tissue are utilized for vaginal rejuvenation and improvement of urinary incontinence. PRP injections of the scalp commonly increase hair growth or PRP coupled with prolotherapy can be injected into joints after injury.

Why use PRP?

Unlike many other injection procedures, such as cortisone or botox, PRP is a naturally occurring part of our blood, meaning the body knows what to do with the healing agents and messengers. Infection or side effects are little to none because your body has no chance of rejection or immune suppression.

PRP is scientifically proven to boost the body’s natural healing process by utilizing its own growth factors, and to be effective in cases of injury to the tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage, bone, and muscles. Studies have shown that the enriched concentration of growth factors in PRP have the potential to increase the speed at which healing occurs, making this procedure the ideal for acute treatment for scars, skin resurfacing, aging, wrinkles, hair growth, diminished function, and more. For some cases, PRP therapy can also reduce the need for medication, surgical approaches, dermatologic and musculoskeletal problems.

Our office has had success with PRP cases ranging from reversed urinary leakage through vaginal PRP, disappearance of abdominal scarring from appendix or gallbladder removals and cancer procedure scarring, diminished bulging veins, skin resurfacing on acne scarring, and much more.

Platelet-Poor Plasma (PPP) is blood plasma with a very low number of platelets. Platelet Poor Plasma (PPP) is derived from the blood during the process of obtaining PPP. It is also rich in growth factors and is uniquely high in fibrinogen. When isolated it can be transformed into a gelatinous material, which can then be injected into the skin and plump the tissue, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Our practitioners are now offering PPP add-ons to PRP injections to enhance the effects of the PRP and serve as a natural “filler”.
